On The Upswing With The Knockdown Shot
The "knockdown" is a controlled shot that works especially well in windy Manitoba. It will enable you to take spin off the ball and keep it below the big winds.
To keep your ball flight down, take one more club than usual and choke down on the grip (see photo). Make sure the ball position is slightly back of the middle of your stance, while also maintaining a forward shaft lean. The weight should be favouring the left leg for a right-handed golfer -- approximately 60% on left leg. And most importantly, swing smoother or approximately 60% of your normal speed. Specifically, a smoother swing will decrease backspin on the ball, which will lower the ball flight. Also, take a back swing that is not your normal full back swing.
Lastly, strive for an abbreviated, short follow through to encourage a lower and penetrating ball flight. This shot is a must-have for the wind and will allow you to hit more greens in regulation and score great on tough days.
Enjoy hitting the wind cheater!
